How high does a snake fence need to be?

A big question we get all the time is: just how high up does my snake fence need to be? We get these questions from all kinds of people, from homeowners to property managers and more. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t widely known, and the result is a big mess of under-informed standards.

Fortunately, we performed some experiments and found the right answer: 36” high.

Snake fencing is a physical way to keep snakes out any given area. It’s designed for rattlesnakes specifically, but may have some repelling effect on non-venomous snakes as well.

Rattlesnakes can be unpredictable and are capable of figuring out a variety of situations, so how do we know this magic number is accurate? Simple: we put snakes of different sizes in a box and watched what happens.

Anything with enough texture is a surface that rattlesnakes can potentially climb. Fortunately, the block walls that surround most Arizona homes is perfect for keeping rattlesnakes out.
